Shadow soldiers are undead entities raised by the Shadow Monarch from the corpses of defeated enemies. Every soldier keeps the strength, skills, and abilities it had in life. They feel no pain, never tire, and cannot be killed by ordinary means. Together they form the shadow army — the most powerful fighting force in the Solo Leveling universe.
How Does Shadow Extraction Work?
Shadow Extraction is the ability that creates shadow soldiers. Jin-woo says “Arise” over a defeated enemy’s body, pulls its soul out, and the soldier rises under his complete command.
Not every extraction succeeds. Jin-woo gets exactly three attempts per corpse before the soul disperses permanently. If the enemy’s willpower was too strong in life, or too much time has passed since death, the extraction fails and that soldier is lost forever. This makes timing a critical part of how Jin-woo fights — he has to secure a body quickly after a kill if he wants to add it to the army.
Once extracted, a shadow soldier is bound to Jin-woo permanently. It retains all the combat abilities it had when alive, including unique skills specific to that individual. A High Orc shaman becomes a shadow mage. A dragon becomes a shadow mount. A Monarch-class enemy becomes a Monarch-class soldier.
Before Jin-woo fully awakened as the Shadow Monarch, a portion of each soldier’s power was sealed on extraction. After the full inheritance, that limitation was removed. Every soldier in his army now operates at its original peak strength.
What Grades Do Shadow Soldiers Have?
Shadow soldiers are ranked in grades from Normal at the bottom to Grand Marshal at the top. Grade determines strength, autonomy, and whether a soldier can speak or be named.

The table below shows each grade and what it means in practical terms.
| Grade | Equivalent Strength | Key Traits |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | E to C-rank Hunter | Foot soldiers, no personality, no speech |
| Elite | B-rank Hunter | Most common grade in the army, no speech |
| Knight | A-rank Hunter | Can be given a name by the Shadow Monarch |
| Elite Knight | Basic S-rank Hunter | Named, capable of complex combat |
| General | Advanced S-rank Hunter | Can speak, capable of independent decision-making |
| Marshal | Above S-rank | Speaks, commands large sections of the army |
| Grand Marshal | Unique — above all others | Commands the entire shadow army; only Bellion holds this rank |
Soldiers can level up over time through combat experience. They can also be promoted through grades, but only with the Shadow Monarch’s direct approval. A soldier does not automatically advance — Jin-woo must grant the promotion.
Where Do Shadow Soldiers Live?
Between battles, shadow soldiers are stored inside Jin-woo’s own shadow — a dimensional space he can access from any shadow surface.

Jin-woo can summon them from the shadow of any object or person nearby. He can also plant soldiers in someone’s shadow specifically to monitor that person and receive alerts if they come under attack, regardless of the distance between them.
Beyond the shadow storage, Jin-woo eventually creates a separate dimension called the World of Eternal Slumber — a constructed world where his soldiers live between deployments. It functions like a nation, with buildings and space for the army to exist outside of combat. Beru keeps his own section there. Igris runs what appears to be a school. It is one of the stranger and more charming details the manhwa includes about how the shadow army actually operates day to day.
What Abilities Do All Shadow Soldiers Share?
Every shadow soldier, regardless of grade, shares a core set of abilities that makes the army fundamentally different from any human fighting force.
- Infinite regeneration — shadow soldiers rebuild themselves even if torn to pieces. The only exceptions are attacks from Monarchs powerful enough to destroy them at a fundamental level, such as Antares’s Breath of Destruction.
- No fatigue — undead soldiers have no physical organs and never tire. They can fight indefinitely without needing rest, food, or recovery.
- Full skill retention — every ability the original being had in life carries over completely.
- Absolute loyalty — all shadows serve the Shadow Monarch without exception. This loyalty extends to the Shadow Monarch’s bloodline. Igris, Beru, and Bellion all showed the same devotion to Jin-woo’s son Sung Su-ho in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok.
- Emotional awareness — higher-grade shadows can sense their master’s emotional state. When Jin-woo experienced intense rage, Beru and other soldiers reacted with visible fear even without being told anything.
Who Are the Named Shadow Soldiers?
There are 12 named shadow soldiers across the series. Ten are permanent members of the army. Two are exceptions.

The table below lists every named soldier, their origin, their grade, and the chapter where Jin-woo first acquired them.
| Name | Origin | Grade | First Acquired |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bellion | Ashborn’s original right-hand, born from the World Tree | Grand Marshal | Inherited with Ashborn’s army |
| Beru | Ant King of Jeju Island | Marshal | Chapter 53 |
| Igris | Blood-Red Commander of the Job Change dungeon | Marshal | Chapter 14 |
| Tusk | High Orc Shaman Kargalgan, leader of the Hunters Guild dungeon | General | Chapter 41 |
| Ant Queen | Queen of the Jeju Island ant colony | General | Chapter 54 |
| Greed | Hwang Dong-soo, S-rank hunter from the Scavenger Guild | General | Chapter 100 |
| Jima | Boss Naga from an A-rank gate | Elite Knight | Chapter 67 |
| Kaisel | Baran’s wyvern mount from the Demon Castle | Elite Knight | Chapter 85 |
| Iron | Kim Chul, A-rank hunter who died in a Red Gate | Elite Knight | Chapter 34 |
| Tank | Alpha Ice Bear from an early dungeon | Knight | Chapter 17 |
| Min Byung-gyu | S-rank healer from the Jeju Island raid | — | Chapter 53 (reversed) |
| Kamish | Dragon boss of the first S-rank gate in history | — | Post-war (deteriorated) |
Min Byung-gyu is the only shadow soldier in the series whose extraction was reversed. After Jin-woo raised him to use his healing ability on Cha Hae-in, Min asked to be released so he could rest. Jin-woo respected the request and undid the extraction. This makes him unique in the entire manhwa.
Kamish was extracted after the Monarchs War when Jin-woo had access to the dragon’s remains. His body deteriorated shortly after extraction and he could not maintain soldier form, cutting his time in the army short.
Who Is the Strongest Shadow Soldier?
Bellion is the strongest shadow soldier in existence — not just in Jin-woo’s army, but across the entire history of the Shadow Monarch.

He was Ashborn’s Grand Marshal for millennia before Jin-woo inherited the army, making him the very first shadow soldier ever created. He was born from the fruit of the World Tree, a mystical entity whose branches could cover an entire sky. When Bellion first appeared in the human world through a gate over Seoul, the Korean Hunter’s Association mobilised all available S-rank hunters, mistaking it for a major threat. He proved his rank by defeating Beru cleanly in a sparring match shortly after arriving.
Beru is the second strongest and the most developed personality in the army. He learned to speak Korean by absorbing the language skills of hunters he fought during the Jeju Island raid through his Gluttony ability. He watches Korean period dramas in his spare time, communicates openly with Jin-woo, and in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok he becomes Sung Su-ho’s primary guide and mentor after Jin-woo leaves Earth.
Igris is the third strongest and the first shadow Jin-woo ever raised. Unknown to Jin-woo at the time, Ashborn placed Igris in the Job Change dungeon deliberately to test whether Jin-woo was worthy of the Shadow Monarch title. Igris was already part of Ashborn’s original army — the fight in Chapter 13 was a test, not a random encounter.
How Big Does the Shadow Army Get?
The army grows continuously across the series, from 20 soldiers at the start to billions by the end.
Jin-woo could only preserve 20 soldiers when he first unlocked Shadow Extraction. As his mana increased, that limit expanded. When he inherited Ashborn’s remaining army, the count exceeded 100,000 soldiers overnight. After using the Cup of Reincarnation and ending the Monarchs War, the army surpassed 10 million. By the epilogue of the new timeline, Jin-woo commands billions. In Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, the count continues growing as he adds soldiers from the Itarim forces.
